4330 is a low alloy steel consisting of nickel, chromium and molybdenum and complying with the standard AMS 6411. It possesses an excellent balance of mechanical properties such as strength, toughness and hardenability. With a tensile strength of 1517 MPa and 0.2% proof stress of 1276 MPa in the normalized and tempered condition, this steel is frequently used in aerospace engineering for manufacture of structural parts demanding high reliability of mechanical characteristics under static loads.

Each alloying element imparts certain features to the steel. Nickel (1.65-2.00%) adds impact resistance and toughness, chromium (0.75-1.00%) - hardenability and moderate corrosion resistance, molybdenum (0.35-0.50%) - strength and protection against temper brittleness. Vanadium addition ensures fine grain structure, thus enhancing toughness and fatigue resistance of the steel. 4330 is easy to heat treat and develops consistent mechanical properties across section. 

This property is very useful in manufacture of landing gear components and shafts requiring uniform mechanical properties throughout section. In comparison with 4340 (0.28-0.33% of carbon against 0.40%), this grade of steel exhibits higher toughness and ductility due to lower carbon content and hence, is preferable in applications involving impact resistance at the expense of maximum hardness. Typical application areas are aircraft landing gear, aircraft shafts, axles and gears.

How does 4330 steel compare to others?

4330 is the name given to a particular grade of Nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. It is not just any steel but refers specifically to the chemical composition and amount of alloying elements in this type of steel. Alloy steels get their special properties by adding certain elements such as Nickel, Chromium, and Molybdenum to the steel.

For 4330 alloy steel, Nickel gives toughness, Chromium gives hardness and resistance to corrosion, and Molybdenum increases its strength and prevents brittleness.

They are both nickel-chromium-molybdenum steels, but 4340 has a higher carbon content (0.4%) than 4330 (0.3%), which means that it has marginally higher strength and hardness after heat treatment. But 4330 steel is tougher and more ductile because of lower carbon content. Both steels have properties like wear resistance, hardenability, and corrosion resistance but 4340 is harder and stronger and 4330 is tougher and more ductile.
